[Reporting that minister Tommy Gilmore was finally asked to resign after news of the lawsuit against him was made known. Yet LONG before that, many church and denominational leaders knew about the substantiated report of Gilmore having sexually abused a minor church girl. If it takes a lawsuit to get a minister removed, then most ministers with reports of having abused minors will easily remain hidden.] SNAP Press Statement at FBC-Oviedo

To our best knowledge, reported Baptist minister Tommy Gilmore has not been found guilty on any criminal charges for sexual assault of a minor. Most reported clergy perpetrators haven't. When other church leaders keep quiet, a perpetrator can often escape detection until after the limitations period has run for criminal prosecution. This historical pattern is all the more reason why denominational leaders should now take responsibility for ridding their ranks of clergy predators. |
