Youth minister accused of sexually assaulting teen

SPRINGFIELD, Tenn. -- A Robertson County youth minister and substitute teacher is accused of sexual assault after incidents involving one of his underage students.

Police said Timothy Felts, 43, was arrested after encounters with a 16-year-old girl in March. Felts was charged with five counts of sexual abuse by an authority figure.

Police said four of the encounters happened at the North Springfield Baptist Church where he is a youth minister. The fifth incident happened at another church property.

Warrants filed against Felts indicate he forced the alleged victim to touch his private parts and fondled her breasts under her clothing.

The teen's family said the child is receiving counseling.

Police said they believe the 16-year-old girl is the only victim of Felts.

He worked around children off and on from 2004 to 2009 while he was a substitute teacher with Robertson County schools.

Felts worked at Springfield High School, however, representatives said Tuesday that he is no longer employed by the district.

Felts has three children and has worked for the church for eight years. He resigned when the allegations surfaced.

Felts was released from jail after posting a $30,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 10. (with video)
